I find my heart heavy today, matching the quiet tapping of rain on the roof, for a multitude of reasons. The most pressing however, are current events within my country of residence and worldwide.
Today in chapel we heard a message from Joshua-- a message of strength and courage. "Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."
I find I am clinging onto these words as I follow as best I can the news from Haiti, and read an update from the ELCA of a young seminary student (a friend of some of the volunteers here) who most likely did not survive the earthquake.
My thoughts also turn to the country I am currently in; to issues of religion, peace, and understanding. Recently, there have been attacks on churches-- events that are uncommon and unsettling in Malaysia (all is safe, but please read more at www.nytimes.com/2010/01/12/world/asia/12malaysia.html).
I also find myself in growing discomfort with situations right outside my doorstep, disconcerting situations of poverty and prejudice within illegal immigrant workers. I find myself torn; between cultures, societal values, and conscience.
And so I am, banned together with the millions of others around the world who read the news, heavy hearted; sitting uncomfortable, wondering, and praying.
Strength and courage.
